Join us for 1-day intensive, interactive equestrian photography workshop at the stunning Stone Meadows Equestrian Centre in Ottawa, Ontario on May 12 2019. 
Included is 2 months mentoring. 
Bonus: Optional, additional 3 week business add on program done online before the one day workshop. (April 17-May 8)

1 day workshop participants have the opportunity to learn first hand:

1- day workshop description: Early bird $480.00 / Regular $580.00
The workshop is specifically tailored for those looking to improve their skills and techniques in equestrian portraiture and horse sport photography. Aimed at those with a basic understanding of photography and a passion for horses.  Hands-on learning in an interactive small groups setting this 1-day workshop is focused on helping amateur, hobbyist photographers to further understand and improve their portraiture and action shots in both dressage and jumping. Whilst the workshop offers technical learning it is not without the chance to explore creativity and evolve photographic style. Making friends and getting pony cuddles is a bonus of the workshop! As part of the one day on site workshop participants receive 2 months mentoring after the workshop.

Done online over 3 weeks. (April 17-May 8 2019)
For those looking for support in building their photography business such building portfolios, working at events, navigating the industry and fine tuning your business action plans this add on option is a must! If the business add-on is purchased, the 3 month mentoring sessions begin after the end of the 3 weeks.

  1. Portraiture
    Using natural light participants are given the opportunity to work on their portraiture skills of both horses alone and horses with humans. Participants will have chance to develop their use of angles, backdrops and use of available light to create dynamic and unique images. Participants can practice shooting various scenarios, gain confidence directing, working the flow of their portrait session and also learn how to handle shoots that aren't going quite as planned. There may also be the opportunity to shoot horses turned out for shots of horses doing what they do best - Have fun in the field! . Please note there is no guarantee that black background shoots will take place due to site logistics and time limitation. No additional lighting will be used during this workshop (that will be another workshop at another time). 

  2. Action photography
    Participants will be able to try shooting everything from basic flat work to Prix St. George level, Jumpers of all varying skill levels. Both indoor and outdoor (sand and grass) rings will be available to provide experience in shooting action in various (and not always easy) environments. Participants will be encouraged to work on timing of shots by predictively reacting, telling stories, understanding how horses move, how to work with the environment and your gear limitations, what to avoid and how to avoid it.  A must have for those looking to cover at horse shows.
  • Image review
    As part of the one day workshop and 2 month mentoring program participants will have the opportunity to have their images taken shoots done during the 2 months mentoring period for review and critique by Cara, this is to encourage continued shooting and development of skills.
  • Participants are encouraged to share their images on the closed private FB group so that others at the workshop can be inspired, learn how to give critique and receive feedback from other members in a safe, supportive and educational space, with no time limit.
    Please note, due to time limitations and usual on hand experts aren't available for this workshop that no technical post processing, editing or photoshop topics will be covered in depth during this workshop. The workshop will touch on basic editing on a creative level only.  Stay tuned for future workshops that cover photo editing. 

  • Long day and lots of learning 
  • Daily workshop activities start at around 8 a.m with breakfast nibbles and finish around 6.30 p.m.  
    Be prepared for a long busy day on your feet and using a lot of brain power. Did I mention it will be intense? There will be several breaks through out the day where you can download your images if needed, have a mental break and refuel.

    • Mentorship
    • Included in the workshop cost is a 2-month mentorship by Cara Grimshaw to ensure that skills continue to develop. Mentoring sessions includes one 60-90minute phone/video call per month and one email reply per week. Mentoring will cover image critique and feedback, general photography skill development, questions, business plans (if taking the business add on) and ongoing online support on fb. 
    • Mentoring starts June 17 due to Cara Grimshaw shooting and travel schedule. 

  • Travel planning and scheduling:
    Successful applicants will be notified by April 10 2019 at the latest. Workshop fee does not include travel costs (ground transport, flights, accommodation etc)
  • The AM classroom session is mandatory for attendance in the rest of the workshop. 
  • Parking is available on site.

  • Food and drinks:
  • Breakfast, mid morning & afternoon nibbles, coffee/tea will be provided as part of the cost.
  • Please feel free to bring your own lunch if you wish (there is a fridge and microwave available) however, lunch will provided for $25 for those who order it on the application form (this is in efforts to help reduce food waste and resources) 
  • Lunch menu is TBD and will try to accommodate all diet's as best possible.

  • Lunch and learn: The lunch break is a casual classroom learning session at the same time so it's not recommended to leave the site for lunch.

Thank you to the Ottawa Dressage Festival you now how the opportunity to join us for 1-day (up to 3 days!) hands on shooting experience and one-on-one learning with Cara Grimshaw at the Ottawa Dressage Festival. 

CGPW2EXPRESS participants have the opportunity to experience and learn first hand:

CGPW2 Express workshop description: 
The EXPRESS workshop is specifically tailored for those aspiring photographer looking to improve their skills and creativity in covering horse show and dressage photography. Aimed at those with a basic understanding of photography and a passion for dressage.  

Hands-on learning with guided learning by Cara Grimshaw. The CGPW2 EXPRESS is focused on helping amateur, hobbyist and aspiring photographers to further understand and improve their dressage action shots and gain experience in covering horse shows. Whilst the workshop offers technical learning it is not without the chance to explore creativity and evolve photographic style. Participants of CGPW2 are eligible to sign up for the Business add-on

  1. Spaces are limited with only 2 spaces available per day. You may sign up for up-to 3 days of shooting. You may also sign up for the CGPW2.

    Action photography
    Participants will be able to try shooting everything from lower level tests to Grand Prix level dressage. Who is Cara Grimshaw?


Cara Grimshaw - A commercial, editorial and portraiture photographer exclusively focused on elite horse sports and racing, event reportage, marketing media and prestigious brand and venue coverage. Based in Vancouver Canada with a part time base in Singapore.

Born and raised on a horse in the UK, Cara has spent the past 18 years living in Vancouver and Ontario. Taking the respected photography certificate courses at Langara College has set the foundation for jumping into full-time photography. Years on Cara has built a prestigious and respected client roster including the FEI, Equestrian Australia, Spruce Meadows, CHIO Aachen, Equestrian Canada and many international riders and teams. Cara has covered events from local level to Olympics.

Cara can often be found standing away from other photographers with a 300mm, singing to herself or drinking caffeine.

Is this workshop the right fit for you?

Suitable for individuals with a basic understanding of controlling a camera manually and those looking to learn new skills and who have an understanding of horses. Participants are familiar with using a DSLR or Mirrorless (interchangeable lenses), editing images using Lightroom or Photoshop.

Applicant requirements:
  • + Open to anyone, worldwide with a minimal level of photography knowledge.
  • + All ages (under 18 must have parental or guardian written consent).
  • + Understanding of English language (the workshop will be held in English)
  • + At least 1 DSLR (film permitted for the second camera) and interchangeable lens. Mirrorless cameras are permitted. 
  • + Able to shoot in Manual mode comfortably is preferred but not mandatory (we will try to avoid using program modes)
  • + Able to submit at least 5 images with application showing current skill level
  • + Laptop or equivalent tablet to download your images throughout the day (desktop computers not permitted on site but you can use it at home!)
  • + Sufficient data storage space (external portable memory drive recommended)

Refunds and cancellations. After payment has been received any cancellations made in writing will be subject cancellation fees (see, " Workshop agreement" for more details). Your spot will be reallocated on your behalf.  You can not send someone in your place (they must pay for their spot)
If the workshop is cancelled due to lack of sign ups (minimum of 6 sign ups required) all funds will be refunded in full or credited towards another workshop. More details on cancellations and refunds can be found on the workshop agreement document

Step 2.

Applying online does NOT mean you are automatically accepted. Sit tight and wait for an email confirmation if your application is successful. Applications are processed on a first come, first served basis as quickly as possible. Applications must be submitted before the deadline and you will be notified at the VERY latest by April 10 if you have a spot! 

If you're successful, you will be sent an invoice to pay. Payment in full is due within 72hrs of your acceptance email (which includes an invoice)

Step 3

Once payment is received please sit tight until the latest April 10 to book any travel. This is due to requiring a minimum of 6 participants to run the workshop. A survival kit and all learning materials will be provided closer to the workshop date.
